When starting any new training regime, it can be daunting, exciting and nerve racking all wrapped into one. Especially something completely different and out of your comfort zone like CrossFit. But don’t worry, we’ve got you.

Coming through the doors can be the hardest thing to do filled with lots of nerves.

“What if I can’t do anything?” “What if I’m the most unfit person?”

These doubts are very common for everyone starting their CrossFit journey and natural we’ve all been there.

When everyone starts at CrossFit Jorvik they enroll on to the Prep Course. This is a 4-session course that will take you slowly through all the movements and techniques needed for CrossFit. While also introducing you to all the coaches and the supportive environment which CrossFit Jorvik has to offer. The majority of people who are on the Prep Course have never done any kind of weight training so don’t worry you’re not on your own. Each Prep session has a small conditioning aspect at the end to prepare you for the mainstream classes.

Once you have completed the Prep Course it’s now time to start classes. With confidence in your new-found knowledge of CrossFit. It’s time to put everything you have learned into practice! Don’t worry if you have forgot some of the names of the exercises there will be 1 or 2 coaches on hand to go through the techniques with you in a group environment and one on one during the class. We don’t expect anyone to know all the techniques perfectly, but that’s our job as coaches to help you reach your full potential. If you haven’t done any exercise for a while we recommend coming 3 times a week and listening to your body.

Now you have been coming to classes for a couple of weeks and settling in, one of the coaches will be in touch to get you down for a goal setting session to go through anything you would like to achieve in the short, medium or long term. This can be performance, nutrition or aesthetics related.

Hopefully with all of this you will be enthused to achieve your goals!  We will provide the guidance, coaching and great Programming all you need to do is turn up, work hard and be part of our great community.

Five Tips For Beginners

Listen to your body

If your feeling run down and tired you’re not going to be getting the most from each session, its ok to rest. Don’t run the risk of over training. CrossFit is all about longevity not quick fixes. Take your time and enjoy the process.

CrossFit is all about quality movement, not about how heavy your bar is or how quickly you did a workout.

Don’t let your ego get in the way! Lifelong fitness is a journey. You will have ups and downs with your training but as long as your consistent with your training and lifestyle choices you will achieve your goals.

Eat right to fuel your body.

Nutrition is the foundation of what we do… You may have heard “You are what you eat” and that is true. If you eat rubbish you will feel rubbish. If you eat nutrient dense food that is good for you, you will be on your way to success.

Get enough sleep to recover

It is recommended 8 hours sleep per night. To achieve this set yourself a target of when you should be in bed to achieve 8 hours’ sleep Try to limit looking at any screens (Phone, Laptops, TV) 90-60 minutes before bed.

Enjoy your training and the process

Try to make training the best hour of your day. Some workouts are tough, but afterwards you will feel a sense of achievement that will make it all worth it and your one step closer to achieving your goals. – “The only workout you regret is the one you didn’t do.”
